President-elect Donald Trump is not happy that the House of Representatives passed a spending bill on Friday night that did not include anything about the debt ceiling. This happened just hours before the government was at risk of shutting down. Now, the Senate is reviewing the bill to decide whether to pass it.
Earlier in the week, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) dropped a previous plan for funding the government after Trump and Elon Musk opposed it. Out of nowhere, Trump insisted that the House either raise or completely get rid of the debt ceiling.
The debt ceiling is a limit on how much money the government can borrow, and it has been a tool used by Republicans in the past to put pressure on Democratic presidents. Democrats, on the other hand, are open to the idea of getting rid of it altogether, saying it causes unnecessary problems.
Trump was clear about his feelings in an interview with Fox News Digital on Thursday. He said any Republican who supports a bill without addressing the debt ceiling should face serious consequences, including being challenged in elections.
However, the bill that passed on Friday did not include anything about the debt ceiling, which clearly frustrated Trump.
According to Burgess Everett, a journalist from Semafor, Trump expressed his disappointment privately. Everett wrote on X that Trump was not happy about the spending bill and that it didn’t include his main demand about the debt ceiling. Although it’s not clear whether Trump will try to stop the bill in the Senate, he isn’t pleased with the situation.
So far, Trump has not made any public statements about the bill being approved.
The bill, which will keep the government running for three months, was passed in the House with strong support from both Democrats and Republicans. A total of 366 lawmakers voted in favor, including 196 Democrats and 170 Republicans. Only 34 Republicans voted against the bill, but their votes weren’t enough to block it. This means the bill easily passed the two-thirds requirement needed to move forward.
