Amber Barnett, a hiker who went missing seven months ago in Arizona’s White Tank Mountains, has been found dead. Her body was discovered on November 24 in White Tank Mountain Regional Park near Waddell. Authorities are still investigating and have not yet determined the cause of her death.
Amber’s family reported her missing after she didn’t return from a hike on the Mesquite Trail on April 2, 2024. Her car was later found in a parking lot at the west end of Ramada Way. Inside the car were her keys and purse, but there was no sign of Amber.
A missing person’s flyer had stated that she was last seen on April 1 in Phoenix, but it was later updated to show she was last known to be hiking in the White Tank Mountains the following day.
On Sunday, November 24, another hiker in the area noticed what appeared to be human remains and reported it to authorities. Deputies arrived and confirmed the remains were human. Investigators, including homicide detectives, are now looking into what happened to Amber.
Amber’s son, Anthony Merlina, wrote a touching tribute to his mother on Facebook two days later, sharing his deep grief and love for her. “My wonderful mother has gone to be with the Lord,” Anthony wrote. “She was found in the White Tank Mountains doing what she loved—seeking the Lord.”
Anthony described his mother as a strong woman of faith who dedicated her life to Jesus and to helping others through prayer. “I am forever grateful for the example she showed me,” he wrote. “She lived her life for Jesus and set herself apart to pray and intercede for others. She will be missed but never forgotten. Thank you, Momma. I miss you every day.”
Amber’s disappearance left her family heartbroken for months. They hoped for her safe return, but the discovery of her body has brought closure, though it has also left many unanswered questions.
Her love for the outdoors and her deep faith defined her life. She often spent time hiking and praying, activities that brought her peace.
The White Tank Mountains, a popular spot for hikers, became the center of a months-long search for Amber. Her tragic story has reminded many people about the importance of safety while hiking, especially when exploring rugged trails alone.
Amber’s family is now mourning the loss of a mother, friend, and woman of faith. Her son’s words reflect the deep impact she had on those around her: “She will always be remembered for her kindness, love, and dedication to her faith.” As they wait for answers from the ongoing investigation, her family and friends are cherishing her memory and the legacy she leaves behind.
